Expectations from relative clauses: Real-time coherence updates in discourse processing
نویسندگان
چکیده
When processing a text, comprehenders use available cues to anticipate both upcoming content and the dependencies that comprise structure of growing discourse. In an eye-tracking while reading experiment, we test discourse updating in passages which are implicit segments convey is not required participate any coherence-driven inference. This study provides strong evidence comprehenders' ability build non-obligatory real time.

Discourse accessibility constraints in children’s processing of object relative clauses
Children's poor performance on object relative clauses has been explained in terms of intervention locality. This approach predicts that object relatives with a full DP head and an embedded pronominal subject are easier than object relatives in which both the head noun and the embedded subject are full DPs. This prediction is shared by other accounts formulated to explain processing mechanisms....
متن کاملTime-Driven Effects on Processing Relative Clauses
The present response time study investigated how a hypothesized time-based working memory constraint of 2-3 s affects the resolution of grammatical and semantic dependencies. Congruent and incongruent object relative (OR) and subject relative sentences were read at different presentation rates so that the distance between dependent words was either shorter or longer than 2-3 s. Incongruent OR s...
متن کاملProcessing relative clauses in Chinese.
This paper reports results from a self-paced reading study in Chinese that demonstrates that object-extracted relative clause structures are less complex than corresponding subject-extracted structures. These results contrast with results from processing other Subject-Verb-Object languages like English, in which object-extracted structures are more complex than subject-extracted structures. A k...
متن کاملExpectations in Incremental Discourse Processing
The way in which discourse features express connections back to the previous discourse has been described in the literature in terms of adjoining at the right frontier of discourse structure. But this does not allow for discourse features that express ezpectations about what is to come in the subsequent discourse. After characterizing these expectations and their distribution in text, we show h...
